Steady, steady...

[The camera swerves and shakes, and glimpses of one of Violet City's inn rooms can be seen as it slows down]

There! Perfect!

[And soon it focuses in on a teenage girl, sitting crosslegged and barefoot on a bed, her back against the wall. She's dressed a lot like a cyclist - if cyclists wore red instead of pink, that is]

Alright, so. [Takes a deep breath] I've been slacking off a little - okay, no, I've been slacking off a lot since I came here. But, I think it's time to start doing more. To get out and actually see this place. And for that, I need to start training - both myself, and my pokemon.

But... there's one thing.

[She waves her hand, and the camera sweeps over to a Kakuna resting upright against the pillows. It zooms in and the Kakuna twitches... right before it flops over and falls on its side. Utena sighs and catches it before it can roll off the mattress, and sets to putting it back upright]

I have no idea what I'm going to do about her. I mean, these bug things are supposed to evolve pretty quickly, right? But it feels like she's been stuck in this cocoon for forever. I'm not going to take her to the gym with me, so maybe it doesn't matter, but...I don't know, I can't help but worry a little-

[And there's a light "paff" as the Kakuna falls over. Again.]

...anyway, if anyone has any advice, that would be great. For Kakuna over here, or the Violet City Gym.

[And she picks her up again, right before the camera cuts off.]

Sometimes it's just best to let them work at their own pace, hmm? She doesn't look unhappy, at least.

[ Though, it's a little hard to tell... ]

No, Piikayu's a girl! She used to look like that, so I thought I could show her what she could turn into. Maybe then she'd want to evolve!

But Piikayu disappeared when I left this place...

Huh. There's only three levels between Weedle and Beedrill. Maybe she just doesn't wanna evolve. I've got a Slowpoke who isn't evolving.

Hm? Oh, certainly! Just a moment...

*There is some rustling about off camera as she digs out her Pokeball, before a bright flash fills the screen! A brief smile from Azusa later, and she moves to one side to reveal......

A Very Large four foot Beedrill with a snazzy red scarf around his neck. He buzzes loudly at the camera in greeting.*

This is Yamato. He's been with me ever since I caught him between Cherrygrove and Violet~

Oh! Yeah, that's probably her. If she's offering her help, take it. She's definitely the best person for the job.

... Though, I kind of have to wonder if even Fluttershy can talk to a cocoon...

I guess there's only one way to find out. Plus, Kakuna's still making some noises... I mean, she's not nearly as chatty as some of my other pokemon, but she's not as quiet as you'd expect, either. That's a good sign, right?

I can set it next to her, no problem. Just gimme a sec...

[Utena places the gear flat on the bed, giving Fluttershy an absolutely stunning view of the ceiling, before she thinks better of it. There's a blurred image of her face and her hand before the camera goes completely black. It's audio time!]

Sorry, just a second longer...

[There's some shuffling around as Utena adjust Kakuna in a steadier position, and sets the gear next to her]

There! Now what?

Yeah...the problem is, I don't know why she doesn't want to. I've never seen this happen before. Though...

[Tilts her head at the camera, as she thinks over what the kid just said]

What about your Slowpoke? Do you know why he won't evolve?

[...it's a bee. A giant bee. Holy shit it's a giant bee with drills for hands. Utena's not sure if this is stupid, terrifying, or the coolest thing she has ever seen.

...though, whatever it is, she has to admit: that is a pretty snappy scarf. After a moment Utena realizes that she's staring, and waves weakly at the camera in greeting. Even if it's a pokemon, it's still polite.]

So he's been with for you a long time, huh? You must be awfully proud of him. But... please don't take this the wrong way, but I think I can see why she'd be afraid to evolve now. I mean, it must be a huge step to go from a little Weedle to something big and tough like Yamato over there.

She doesn't look unhappy because she doesn't have a face. Or at least, it's not much of a face...

You have a point, though. I don't want to push, really, I just want to make sure that she's all right in there. It's kind of hard to tell sometimes.

[OOC: Sorry for dropping that old thread with Charles and Winry, by the way. That was pretty flaky of me]

[So he got sent home, only to get dragged back here - and, on top of that, his old pokemon are gone. Poor kid... Utena's expression softens, sympathy obvious on her face]

I'm sorry to hear that, and I know that it must be hard to come back and see that your old friend's gone. But, I'm sure that Piikayu's just fine, wherever she is. And I'm not just saying that, either - someone else just showed me what these things look like when they evolve, and I gotta say, they seem pretty tough. Plus, who knows? Now that you're back, maybe you'll be able to find each other again.

[She patiently waits, and when Fluttershy speaks up, much more chipper and less shy, now that she's talking to a Pokemon.]

Hello, Kakuna. My name is Fluttershy. It's very nice to meet you. May we talk for a bit?

[He nods] I've been looking for them! But no one has seen them yet. But I know that if they're somewhere out there, we'll find each other! And they will look after each other.

I dunno. He could just be lazy — he's... a Slowpoke. But, y'know, I didn't train him for a long time. Like, months or something. He got to level thirty-three and I pretty much quit battling with him. I just started training him again, like, a few weeks ago, so maybe that has something to do with it.

[Wow, she's like a completely different person. She's still quiet, but also more confident, somehow. Utena listens intently, while Kakuna starts to chirrup]

Talk...? About what? [Sounds a little suspicious]

[OOC: If the font color for Kakuna's speech/actions is too hard to read, just say the word and I can switch to something else to differentiate her from Utena.]

Your trainer and I would like to know why you haven't evolved yet. I've heard all kinds of reasons from other Pokemon who also didn't want to evolve... I'd just like to hear yours, so I can tell her.

[She's very calm and motherly as she talks to the bug, yet talking to it as you would your friend - because talking to animals is totally normal, right...]

Maybe. I mean, if you left him like that for a while, he might have gotten comfortable. He might be thinking, "this is good enough, so why bother?"

...it's warm in here. Besides, it doesn't really matter if I stay like this or not, does it? Everyone else takes care of the battles anyway.

[sounds tired and drowsy more than anything, but there's just a little bit of wistfulness as she continues to talk]

[She pauses. She was... kind of expecting a more noble reason, like she's heard other mons. This just sounds lazy.]

Um... So you don't want to come out because... You don't want to fight, and you don't care what happens?

It's not like I can do a lot, anyway. I used to fight, but every time I'd go out, I'd be brought right back and someone else would finish it off. If everyone has to fight for me, then why should I bother?

I see, I think... Well, would you mind if I told your trainer about these reasons? She's been worried because she cares about you very much.

Yeah, exactly. I dunno if he'll ever evolve, but I'm gonna keep training him, anyway, to make him as strong as he can be.

I suppose it would be. It's a little strange to think of a cocoon doing... well, anything, really, but Pokemon are like that sometimes. Good luck, then. With her on the job I'm sure you'll be able to figure out the underlying problem.

[Utena pauses for a moment, unsure if Kakuna's done talking or not. But, she doesn't hear any more chittering, so!]

So, how'd it go?

[Curious, curious, and just a little nervous. Well, more than a little nervous, but she's trying to keep it together]

[Now that she's talking to Utena again, she becomes once more shy and less confident in her speaking.]

Um... She doesn't want to evolve because she doesn't see the point. Since your other Pokemon usually take over the battles, Kakuna doesn't feel she's a good battler.
